For many people, a public park without a fountain is like a beach without water. But when city officials worked out cost estimates for the Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park project this year, they reluctantly decided to shelve plans for fountains and other amenities. That is, until philanthropist Norma Gene Lykes came into the picture. Her nonprofit group, the F.E. I voted for Sheriff Benton when she ran the first time, but she will not get a vote from me this time. I don't trust her judgment. There have been some items that have come up that make me doubt if it is in the best interest of the county to keep her on as sheriff. Where Do All TheTax Dollars Go? I am a mother of two, one in high school and one in elementary. My concern is I'm sure, like most parents every year, our taxes have gone up, and every year the school supply lists get bigger and longer. Also, there are now lab fees for my son in high school that are mandatory to pay now. I am sure we're not the only family feeling the cost of living going up considerably this year along with gas prices and groceries prices as well. ...more
