We all know current economic times are stressful; there is a significant lack of funds coming into our state and local government. Our schools are suffering losses in income. I have read reports that Highlands County will need to operate with at least 30 less teachers next year. My basic question is, can we continue to offer quality education to our students with 30 fewer teachers? ...more

In October, Robert LaSala was named Pinellas County administrator. He assumed the post following 13 months in which Fred Marquis, serving as interim administrator, brought calm back to county government after the tumultuous events of 2007. A questioned land deal prompted, in September 2007, the County Commission to fire County Attorney Susan Chiruti and let County Administrator Steve Spratt know they wouldn't mind if he resigned. Well it's finally over. I didn't think the day would ever come when the signs would come tumbling down. Actually I missed a lot of the Election Day excitement by voting early, but we did drive by our precinct just to see how much of a line we would have had to wait in. When we got there, there was none. Precinct Sheriff Jim Smith, who was featured on the front page of our paper a week or so ago, said they had a large turnout but it was more of a steady flow, which kept the lines down. ...more
