Five deputies were involved in a shootout with a murder suspect. One deputy and his canine partner saved a woman who had overdosed. Five others dragged a woman to safety after her home burst into flames. All were honored Tuesday by Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee during the agency's quarterly awards ceremony at Falkenburg Road Jail. Those receiving honors, and applause from their peers, included Master Deputy Chris Grecco and his canine Bullit, for finding and rescuing a woman who overdosed on medication and was stranded in the woods on Feb. 21. ...more

Fireworks could erupt this afternoon when the Hillsborough County Commission takes its first hard look at next year's budget shortfall. County Administrator Pat Bean surprised some commissioners Friday when she said the bleak economic outlook could force her to lay off 1,000 employees over the next two years. Commissioner Al Higginbotham questioned whether so many layoffs are necessary, and he accused Bean of using the layoff announcement to pressure Sheriff David Gee into reducing his workforce. ...more
