SEBRING — Valentine's Day is a time for lovers to express their feelings — and sometimes they do it in places you wouldn't expect — like the courthouse. But on Thursday it remained unusually quiet in the marriage licensing department at the Highlands County Courthouse. "We were really shocked because we didn't have very many appointments," said Debbie Carpenter. "I don't know why we don't have the same number (of ceremonies scheduled) as we've had in the past." In all, the courthouse had three marriage ceremonies scheduled on Thursday, but only two couples showed up. The state has taken away "public transportation" for Medicare recipients, to help reduce our taxes. If you are on Medicaid you can receive it, but if you're on Medicare, there is no more funding for it, and you just don't need it. That must be their theory? My daughter, who has a progressive crippling disease, was recently denied transportation for a "follow- up" appointment, two days after she had cataract surgery. I have spent two days phoning all over the state without any results. She has to have another cataract removed, which involves two appointments again, and three other appointments before the year's end. ...more
