TARPON SPRINGS - Restoration has been completed on the Tarpon Springs.
The city's sponge boat, which has become an attraction and photo opportunity at the Sponge Docks, is once again shipshape.
City crews refurbished the wooden vessel, which had deteriorated after years in the Anclote River. The city was lucky to have someone on staff who was able to oversee the work, according to City Manager Mark LeCouris.
The in-house labor greatly reduced the cost of the nautical renovation job. Initial estimates of the cost of having an outside contractor repair and refurbish the vessel were in the neighborhood of $150,000.
In 1990 the floating monument to the city's storied sponge-fishing industry was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Tarpon Springs was once a working member of the city's sponge boat fleet.
