For most of her life, Naviae Lockshier has been on a spiritual journey in search of answers to the mysteries of life and existence. Her quest led her to seek knowledge from a variety of spiritual experts, from Connecticut to Hawaii and British Columbia to California.
A clairvoyant shaman skilled in Mayan and Hawaiian astrology and deciphering the tarot, Lockshier has of late found contentment sharing her knowledge and skill with people in the Palm Harbor area.
Lockshier first became aware of her psychic ability at age 4, when she dreamed her uncle would die on her birthday, July 11. He was in perfect health when she had the dream, in January. In July, he died not long after being diagnosed with cancer.
Ever since, Lockshier just knew in advance of certain life-changing occurrences.
At 19 she moved out of her parent's home and set off on a quest to find herself, her purpose and the meaning of life. She first learned about Celtic astrology, along with spiritual energy found in listening to and watching forces of nature.
She then decided to travel to Central America to study Mayan astrology. It is different from the Western astrology and its 12 signs of the Zodiac.
It seemed every door of opportunity closed when she tried to travel to Central America. Several opportunities, however, began to open for her to study a Hawaiian variant of Mayan astrology practiced by Kahunas, the term for a shaman in the islands.
She decided to study on the big island. Hawaii, according to Lockshier, attracts two types of visitors: those who just want to travel to the islands and those who want to soak up the culture and teachings of the islands.
Lockshier admits to being of the latter sort. She lived in a tent and learned from mystics who give up all worldly possessions to understand the true meaning of life, she said.
While in Hawaii she pondered questions about life, such as "Who are you?" and "Where are you going?" She also studied more traditional Mayan astrology, and then traveled to British Columbia to study from herbalists, who were so in touch with the cycle of plants that they could hear their vibrations, she said.
She mastered shamanic healing techniques of Hawaii, the Mayan culture and Polynesia, becoming a Theta Healing practitioner, tarot reader and Reiki teacher.
Using birth dates, Mayan astrology gives a reference point to daily energies that work through us and around us, Lockshier said. It enhances a person's view of their cosmic identity and reveals a blueprint for earthly destiny.
A person's birth date corresponds with a series of 20 tribes and 13 tones that reflect personality, experiences and spiritual forces to be encountered in life. It reveals what a person should do to live in harmony with nature and prepare for life's stages.
Lockshier wants to remain humble, so she does not really relish being called a shaman or other terms that would categorize her into a box. Her idea is to blend all her teachings to enlighten those she meets, she said. She blends her clairvoyant skills with revelations from the tarot cards and Mayan calendar to give people insight into their spirit, past and future.
"God is everything and everything is God," she said, adding, "You exist and you are going to change."
She added: "Life is change. What you put into it you get back. We are here to live the mystery of life, not solve it."
People enjoy the revelation found in Mayan and Hawaiian astrology once it is explained to them and they see it in action, Lockshier said. By deciphering the past and present and cycles of the coming year, a person can gain a deeper understanding of themselves, their relationships with others and how to gain a greater perspective.
She said she is glad that the spirit world brought her to Florida, where she already feels at home.
Lockshier, who conducts tarot readings and conducts classes at Oak Trail Books on Florida Avenue in Palm Harbor's historic downtown district, is willing to give a class in Mayan astrology if there is enough interest. She will participate in the shop's psychic fair on Sept. 12.
