Ah Halloween, when spirits, ghosts and the creative muse are all particularly active.
With humble apologies to Edgar Allen Poe, who inspired poets with masterpieces such as "The Raven," I too suddenly pondered weak and weary, over forgotten images of Halloweens past from years before.
While I wondered, painstakingly perusing, perhaps snoozing, there came images I wished to recall nevermore.
All the while I wondered, sometimes even muttered, were these mere thoughts and nothing more?
While in my daze I did remember it was October, almost November that had me recall images of splendor, a time quite tender from years before. It was lament of a heart broken and nothing more.
I do believe she was named Lenore.
Alas, I saw her one Halloween, yet nevermore.
She was dressed as Elvira. It was a few drinks I did buy her, a steak dinner, diamond watch and a tire, but nothing more.
Her smile was beguiling, her dress was styling and in her laugh your faith it was restored. One was easily enchanted by her words, soon recanted, and by the radiance of sweet Lenore.
Her image my mind forever stored, to be remembered evermore.
Oh sure I did Google, but with a mere first name a search was futile. Still her face I could doodle. Doodle but nothing more; for I had no photo of dear Lenore. Still, hearing echoes of her laughter was no chore. I recalled it heretofor.
Twas excitement she was cravin'. She changed her name to Raven. They say she makes a fellow poor.
She flew off to join the circus. Fluttered away with no real purpose. On the trapeze she did soar. I heard this, but nothing more of dear athletic Raven-Lenore.
Suddenly, I heard the shutter, something hit it, I did utter, bringing thoughts to the present, not as before.
So heed my warning not to ponder to way back yonder, when October turns in November, back to years before. For your mind it will wander back to images of an encounter with some lovely Raven-Lenore. Someone you'll adore evermore.
(Writer's note: This month marks the 160th anniversary of Mr. Poe's death.)
