PALM HARBOR - Teachers in Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough counties have an optional homework assignment to consider - not for their students, but for themselves, and the reward could be considerably more than a gold star.
The "Back-in-School Extreme Makeover Contest" offers teachers in Pasco, Pinellas and Hillsborough counties the chance to win a package designed to refresh and rejuvenate the body and spirit.
Dr. Edward Mackay, a vein specialist with practices in Palm Harbor and St. Petersburg, came up with the idea to show appreciation to educators. Mackay's wife, Diane, is a teacher at Ponce de Leon Elementary School, in Clearwater. His mother and sisters are also teachers.
"I thought this would be a great gift to teachers, like my wife, who work so incredibly hard to make an impact on the lives of our children," Mackay said. "I feel like sometimes it goes unrecognized how often they ignore their own problems taking care of everybody else's."
Mackay's practice will offer several services to the contest winner:
• A complimentary spider vein treatment.
•One free microdermabrasion treatment.
•An Obagi gift set of toner, face wash and sunscreen.
•A laser hair removal treatment on a single body part.
Mackey will also make a donation to the school of the winning teacher.
Several other businesses are contributing to the prize package.
In addition to the personal treatments Mackay is offering, Dr. William Adams, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon in St. Petersburg, will provide the winner with a laser skin rejuvenation treatment.
Once all the hardcore maintenance is done, Salon Agape, in Palm Harbor, will apply the fine tuning - a haircut, blow-dry and styling; manicure, pedicure and makeup makeover.
"We're so excited to give one of our teachers a full makeover," the salon's owner and stylist, Markie Whitt, said. "They deserve to be pampered after all the hard work they put into our kids."
The prize package also includes 10 free cycling lessons at SOHO Cycling Studio, in Tampa, four Regal Cinemas movie tickets and a $45 gift certificate to Outback Steakhouse.
The winning teacher will be able to treat his or her whole class to a fieldtrip. The Museum of Science and Industry, in Tampa, has donated 40 admission tickets to the package.
Teachers can enter the contest, or be nominated by someone else with the teacher's permission, which must be included in the entry.
Entries must include a brief written explanation why the teacher deserves to win a full makeover. The form must also list the contestant's full name, telephone number and alternate number, postal address and e-mail address, a headshot photo and a photo of the spider veins to qualify for the removal treatment.
The photos will not be published in any way. They will only be used to determine eligibility for removal treatment.
Mackay said he will look over the entries and likely will choose the entrant he thinks he can do the most good for with the services he is offering.
On the other hand, the written submissions will also play a large role. He and wife Diane will select the winner based on those.
"I really look forward to being able to give this great prize away to a peer," Diane Mackay said. "I know firsthand what it means to have a long day and just want to look and feel good at the end of it."
Entries in the Back-in-School Extreme Makeover Contest should be submitted by e-mail to DrMackayContest2009@gmail.com. Entries will be accepted through Nov. 16.
