PALM HARBOR - A 37-year-old Port Richey woman was critically injured this morning after she stepped out of her broken-down pickup on U.S. 19 – and another pickup struck hers, causing it to hit her, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Lisa M. Wood was bleeding from the head and mouth and was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital by ambulance due to the inclement weather, the patrol said.

The other driver, identified as George Peates, 70, of Palm Harbor, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Mease Countryside Hospital, the patrol said. Peates was not charged, but investigators obtained a blood sample from him.

At 6:15 a.m., Wood's 1993 Toyota pickup broke down in one of the southbound lanes of U.S. 19 at Tampa Road, the patrol said. She got out of the truck and was in front of it when her truck was rear-ended by a 2003 Toyota truck driven by Peates, the patrol said.

The investigation prompted authorities to close the southbound lanes, resulting in a back-up that extended to Nebraska Avenue, authorities said this morning.
