PALM HARBOR - The work of local artist George B. Trimitsis is on display in the Palm Harbor Library's Art Alcove until the end of the year.
"With a doctorate in chemistry, Trimitsis' art reflects his formal education in the sciences, along with his fascination with poetry and mythology," notes Debbie Phillips, a library spokeswoman.
"He belongs to a contemporary generation of artists for whom the computer is an integral tool in the art-making process," she said. "His completed works lie somewhere between fact and fiction, reality and imagination, art and science."
At 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, Trimitsis will give a talk at the library, "Trends in Contemporary Art and the Emergence of New Media." He will discuss the history of the post-modernist movement.
Trimitsis, a member of the Dunedin-based Professional Association of Visual Artists, has found that his involvement in both the arts and science has given him a unique perspective in each of these fields, Phillips said. He has found it liberating to delve into art making, "where even the sky does not pose a limit."
The computer, his primary tool, gives him "the flexibility to carry out what amounts to research in art making."
Trimitsis, who retired in 2006 and moved to Palm Harbor in 2007, was on the chemistry faculty at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Prior to that he was in the chemistry department of what is now known as Virginia Tech.
He has exhibited his art nationally. His works have found a home in permanent collections at various museums, institutions, and private collections.
Trimitsis' art can be seen on his Web site.
The Art Alcove is open Monday through Saturday during library hours at 2330 Nebraska Ave.
