Only a few years ago, Pinellas County and city officials were worrying aloud that condo developers were going to snatch up all the county's waterfront property, driving off the Pinellas tourism and hospitality industry. Long before that could happen, the state's real estate market collapsed, bringing the condo development craze to a halt.
On the other hand, having the state's housing and realty industries plunge off a cliff has had a big negative impact on government revenue, both in Tallahassee and for county and city governments. This has had officials sweating over how to match a diminished revenue stream to proposed spending.
Now, however, things might not be quite as gloomy as some feared, at least in the northern part of the county. The Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office has said some North Pinellas cities won't lose as much revenue during their 2010 fiscal years as the office had previously predicted.
There are still tough budget times ahead but perhaps the area's economic outlook is beginning to brighten ever so slightly.
