Most of the time, Crystal Beach just sits there west of Alt. 19, between Tarpon Springs and Palm Harbor, and doesn't make a peep. That changed this week when the Crystal Beach Community Association, perhaps only temporarily, knocked the Palm Harbor incorporation juggernaut off the rails. A group known as the Palm Harbor Coalition has been pushing to turn the Palm Harbor area, population roughly 60,000, into a city. Palm Harbor doesn't get a fair financial shake from Pinellas County, it says.
This week, however, the coalition asked lawmakers to withdraw proposed legislation that would have set up a referendum later this year on a plan to incorporate Palm Harbor and some adjacent areas, like little Crystal Beach, population 1,200 or so. Coalition leaders heard the rumblings of opposition to incorporation emanating from - and possible spreading out of - Crystal Beach and didn't have time to rework the incorporation legislation in time for action on it during this year's legislative session.
Coalition leaders say they're continuing the incorporation push and will be back before the Legislature next year with a proposal that would omit Crystal Beach if community leaders give them a legal description of the area they want excluded. Whether Crystal Beach is a part of a Palm Harbor city isn't a big deal, the coalition says.
Maybe, but the folks in Crystal Beach probably enjoyed stirring the pot a bit. We also wonder if anyone else will want to grab the spoon.
