I would like to respond to Mark Schantz's Feb. 21 op-ed page column, "A Cross We All Have to Bear." Schantz must have gotten crossed up in traffic. He was supposed to write something positive about crossing guards. To get him going down the right street, he must first look up the definition of the word "patience."
I traveled the same streets Schantz mentioned and watched the crossing guards at the busy Tampa Road-Belcher Road intersection. They do a super job of crossing the youngsters in a safe manner.
Schantz suggested sheriff's deputies serve as crossing guards. I'll bet they wouldn't mind it a bit, but they face more dangerous assignments. As for his suggestion teachers take turns bonding with their students by serving as crossing guards, does he have any idea of how much time a teacher puts in before and after their regular school day?
Schantz should stop stumbling in the dark and find the right roads to cross safely.
