Waste Management revises pickup schedule

TARPON SPRINGS - Mondays and Thursdays will soon be the only days for residents to place their garbage at curbside for pickup.

A few months ago the City Commission approved Waste Management's request to change its pickup schedule so trucks are not in the city all five days of the work week.

The change in pickup days is part of the waste hauler's plan to improve the efficiency of its countywide operations. Under the new arrangement, all Waste Management trucks and supervisors will operate in the northern, central or southern portions of the county on specified days.

Before the change, Waste Management crews spread through the entire county every day of the work week, rather than focusing on a geographic area. Waste Management officials told city commissioners the new plan will allow supervisors to keep a closer watch over crews and handle missed pickups quicker.

Starting Monday, July 6, Waste Management will collect nonrecyclable garbage in all parts of the city on Mondays and Thursdays.

Under the new schedule, the hauler will collect recyclable materials and yard waste one day a week:

•Residents on the east side of Alt. 19 will have their recyclable items picked up on Mondays and their yard waste collected Thursdays.

•Residents on the west of Alt. 19 will have their yard waste collected Thursdays and their recyclables collected Mondays.

There are some rules customers must observe:

•All three forms of solid waste should be at curbside by 7 a.m. of the scheduled pickup day.

•There is a five can or bag limit.

•No more than 50 pounds of garbage will be collected at one time.

Junk mail, magazines and phone books are not eligible to be recycled. Items that should be recycled are: aluminum cans; glass bottles and jars of all colors; corrugated cardboard that fits in the recycling bin; newspapers; plastic bottles; and steel cans.
