Fans across the Tampa Bay area are reacting to the passing of Michael Jackson. Several radio stations in the area played Jackson hits most of the day, including WRBQ, 104.7 FM, in St. Petersburg.
"I have two more songs that I wanted to play just because they were kind of special. And this is one of them," Q105 morning show host Mason Dixon said introducing Jackson's "Man in the Mirror."
The deejay compares Jackson to several icons who've played a crucial role in the American pop music scene.
"On the pedestal of music for our generation, there's three people. There's Elvis, there's the Beatles, collectively, and there's Michael Jackson," Dixon said.
Local record stores are finding in difficult to keep Jackson inventory in stock.
At Vinyl Fever on Henderson Boulevard in south Tampa, Jackson CDs and LPs have been in high demand since word of his death hit the airwaves.
Store owner Lee Wolfson says he's not surprised.
"When something like this happens there is usually this kind of demand, let alone somebody of this magnitude."
Customer Dan Smith snagged one of the last Jackson CDs available in the store.
"You know, we lost an icon and it just seemed like the thing to do," he said. "I don't have a turntable any more so I figured I'd buy a CD because they're going pretty quick."
