TARPON SPRINGS - The Sweetbay Supermarkets, the anchor tenant of the Meres Crossing Town Center, recently moved a step closer to opening its full-service supermarket.
With construction of the supermarket and retail center at South Pinellas Avenue and Meres Boulevard under way, the City Commission considered July 7 a request from the grocery chain for a zoning conditional use needed for the package sale of alcoholic beverages.
The 38,000-square-foot Sweetbay will include a liquor store.
After City Planner Renae Vincent noted there are other business in the area with package alcohol sales, commissioners approved Sweetbay's conditional use request without comment.
The Sweetbay store, scheduled to open in November, is the main attraction to the Meres Crossing Town Center. It will have other retailers, offices and a branch of Region's Bank.
The Meres Crossing project also will see the construction of a medical arts complex and apartments for seniors between the center and Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital.
As part of the project, the city will extend Meres Boulevard east, to U.S. 19. The Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail, which runs along the eastern boundary of the project site, will have connections to Meres Crossing.
