DUNEDIN - Stirling Hall, a former recreation center that stood for several decades at 730 Broadway, off Main Street in downtown Dunedin, is being transformed into an artists colony with a retail and office center.
Developer Joseph Kokolakis is transforming Stirling Hall and the adjacent Dicus Building into a complex that will be known as Stirling Commons.
This is not the first downtown Dunedin renovation project for Kokolakis. He previously refurbished a row of shops at the northern corner of Main Street and Alt. 19 and donated land to the city that became Purple Heart Park.
The opening of Stirling Commons will mark the return of the Dunedin Fine Art Center to Broadway, which is off Main Street near the heart of the downtown retail and entertainment district.
Kokolakis did not initially respond Monday to a message seeking comment left at his office in Tarpon Springs.
Several years ago, DFAC, a privately run art museum and art instruction center, opened a small gallery in Douglas Village. DFAC, however, was forced to close the gallery for budgetary reasons.
The Dunedin Fine Arts Center's Stirling Commons Campus, scheduled to open in September on the second floor of Stirling Commons, will include art studios, an exhibition gallery and space for classes and seminars, said George Ann Bissett, DFAC director.
Kokolakis is also creating retail, office and restaurant space in the redevelopment project.
