Classic Guitarist Coming To Tarpon Center

David Burgess did not become the rock star he once wanted to be.

But his fans would say his career as a classical guitarist is even better. Burgess will bring his classical guitar to Tarpon Springs Cultural Center Saturday, Feb. 7, with a musical menu including rare Brazilian numbers.

"It's popular with the audience because it's an unusual repertoire you probably won't hear at another guitar concert," he said.

Many of his numbers come from the recording and sheet music collection of an 89-year-old Brazilian guitar teacher whom Burgess knows from his annual visits to the South American country with his Brazilian wife. The elderly man has 7,000 guitar recordings. Some date from 1913, Burgess said.

BURGESS

The Brazilian also has 35,000 pieces of sheet music, most of which are long out of print.

In his concerts, Burgess draws from some of the 6-foot-tall stack of copies of Latin American sheet music and 500 copies of recordings he has accumulated from the teacher.

Although some of the music was considered popular music at its time, it can pass as classical guitar, Burgess said. "The dividing line between classical music and popular music is hazy in Latin America," he noted.

Burgess is making his third appearance at the Tarpon Springs Cultural Center.

He brings an impressive background that includes studying periodically with famed classical guitarist Andres Segovia after winning the 1985 Andres Segovia Fellowship Competition, in New York City.

Since then, his appearances as soloist and chamber musician have taken him to Europe, Asia, South America and throughout North America.

He has appeared as orchestral soloist with the chamber orchestra Philharmonia Virtuosi of New York and the American Chamber Orchestra, at the Kennedy Center.
