What a good op-ed page column by Mark Schantz in the Jan. 24 North Pinellas edition of The Suncoast News. It is by far the most reasoned and balanced article I have seen on the Pinellas school-closing issue. The subject hits close to home with me because two of my children will move schools as a result of this decision.
No, changing schools won't kill my children, but I can find $4 million to $5 million in potential savings over and above the ideas already discussed by the School Board using only the School District budget summary. There must be a lot more savings that could be found.
I'm only sorry we couldn't get an audit of the School District budget before the vote to close schools. This is especially important because school capacity numbers under the state class size amendment – provided by student assignment – indicate that there may not be enough space for students without the addition of portables.
How do we get an independent audit of School District finances now?
I so appreciate Schantz's column on the subject. So far, no other publication has directly suggested an audit. I hope you do not give up on the subject. You have represented your readers well.
