TARPON SPRINGS - Local singers, dancers, actors and musicians who star in Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center productions are rallying to keep the center alive and kicking.
This year the city's Cultural Services Department found its state grant support for public events cut by $5,000, to slightly less than $9,000, said Gen Haley, city cultural and civic services marketing assistant. Next year looks even bleaker, she said.
With major state and local revenue reductions looming, Cultural Services Department officials are looking for creative and enjoyable ways for the city to maintain its vibrant arts program, she said.
To that end Cultural Services is planning to present several performance-oriented fundraisers during the year to offset losses in grant revenue for their performance season.
The first offering in the series, "Enchanted Evening of Stars," will be presented 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at the Performing Arts Center, inside City Hall, at 324 Pine St.
Last year's inaugural "Enchanted Evening of Stars," which features local performers, raised about $5,000, Haley said. More than 30 of the Performing Arts Center's favorite singers, dancers, instrumentalists and actors will donate their time and talent during this year's edition.
The fundraising performance will feature selections from "South Pacific," "The King and I," "Oklahoma" and "Forever Plaid," along with various arias, dances and comedy routines.
"Our patrons have been central to our ability to share world class arts experiences with all of Tarpon Springs," she said.
People who attend the extravaganza will not only support the performing arts but also show appreciation to the artists, Haley said.
Tickets, $30, $25, $20 or $15, are available through the Performing Arts Center Box Office, at 727-942-5605, or online at www.tarponarts.org>.
