TARPON SPRINGS - Two dominating defensive quarters for Tarpon Springs allowed the Lady Spongers to grab a comfortable 61-37 victory Monday night over visiting Dixie Hollins.
The Lady Rebels (1-15) were limited to only three points in the game's opening period and then just two in the third.
Tarpon (11-8) did not have a particularly great night shooting from the floor, but dominated on the boards and forced 22 Dixie turnovers.
Top performer and University of Tampa commit Alli Corbett led the Spongers with 21 points and 17 rebounds. Forward Nicole Crafton followed with 18 points and 7 rebounds and Marianna Karavokiros and Bree Johnson each added 8 points.
While the Tarpon lead was not seriously threatened all night, the Rebels' Brittany Kirkland did spur an impressive comeback attempt in the second quarter that brought Dixie within eight points. Kirkland poured in 18 points – four 3-pointers – in the first half alone.
The Spongers regained control once the second half began after going into the locker room with a not-so-stable 34-24 lead. A quick 12-0 run put the game effectively out of reach.
Kirkland finished as the Rebels' leading scorer with 18 points, followed by guard Jessica Crandle's 13.
Tarpon finishes up its regular season with two non-district games this week. They travel to Seminole on Wednesday night and host Northeast on Thursday for Senior Night.
