Dunedin Artists Invite Friends To Show Their Stuff

Published: January 3, 2009

It has been a quarter of a century of a little help from their friends.

To say thank you, Ira Burhans and Barbara Melby-Burhans are marking the 25th anniversary of their partnership, known as Clay and Paper, by exhibiting the work of 25 of their friends. The exhibit will be in Clay and Paper/Painted Fish Gallery, the downtown Dunedin art gallery they share with fellow artists Linda and Bill Renc. It will run from Jan. 3 until Feb. 8.

Burhans makes stoneware pottery, and Melby-Burhans crafts cast-paper wall sculptures.

Artist friends have provided support, friendship and creative ideas, Melby-Burhans observed. "You've got people to talk about things with (whom) you can be honest with, and you can learn from."

The friends represent a wide range of artistic media, including jewelry, pottery and mosaics. Other media are linoleum block prints, wire artwork and encaustic painting, or painting with beeswax to which colored pigments have been added.

St. Augustine-based potter Ken Jensen will display raku pottery. The pottery is removed from the kiln while still hot and subsequently smoked in material such as sawdust, Melby-Burhans noted. This traditional method is used to create Japanese ceremonial pottery.

St. Petersburg artist Lisa Glaser is contributing whimsical ceramics featuring animals.

Tampa artist Elizabeth Mitchell is offering a painting on silk of a cafe scene.

Kevin Hluch, an instructor at Montgomery College in Rockville, Md., will exhibit a hand-built ceramic in the form of a female torso.
