Tarpon Could Permit Apartments In Industrial Parks

TARPON SPRINGS - People who want to live in an industrial park moved closer to having their dream realized this week.

At their meeting Tuesday night, city commissioners endorsed planning staff's request to permit accessory dwelling units in industrial districts.

Commissioners gave preliminary endorsement of the idea, asking Vincent to return for a hearing once the particulars are addressed.

City Planner Renae Vincent said a recent request from an industrial park owner inspired the proposed change. The owner wanted to provide quarters for a night watchman to live on the property, Vincent said.

Any changes would have to be carefully planned to pass muster with the county's vision of the land development code, Vincent said.

For example, only one accessory dwelling unit would be allowed per parcel and it would have to be either owner-occupied or rented. No more than one family would be permitted to occupy the unit.

Commissioner Robin Saegner said a change could also permit artists to live above a studio in an industrial district to produce large-scale items such sculptures or ironworks.

Commissioner Peter Dalacos said there is no real urgency for staff to put this item on their front burner, considering all the other items they have been asked to address.

Commissioner Chris Alahouzos said he would want the city protected against noise complaints from anyone who may eventually be permitted to reside in an industrial park.
