Business Brings Mexican Flavor To Downtown

TARPON SPRINGS - There is a lot of pride stuffed into this taqueria.

Taqueria, Spanish for "little taco shop," is a term initially coined for popular outdoor taco stands.

The Aguirre family opened Tacos Cielito Lindo, named after the Mexican popular song with the "Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay" refrain, a year ago. The taqueria is in a storefront at 672 E. Tarpon Ave., just west of U.S. 19.

After just one year of serving flavorful Mexican dishes, the Aguirres recently expanded their hours and menu to include breakfast.

Over the last year the taqueria's overstuffed tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tamales, quesadillas, nachos and tostadas caught the attention and appetites of many locals who flock to their storefront

For breakfast their egg dishes include rice and beans, home-style potatos and tortillas or their breakfast burrito.

Their greatest achievement during the last year has been bringing the homemade flavor that distinguishes their dishes as authentically Mexican to downtown Tarpon Springs, said Monica Aguirre. The family takes a lot of pride in the quality of their food, she said.

Before opening the taqueria, the family operated Cielito Lindo Mexican Restaurant. They sold the full-service eatery at the Sponge Docks after five years in business.

Juan Aguirre, Monica's brother, said he loves Tarpon Springs and its friendly people and beautiful weather.

Prior to moving to Tarpon Springs the Aguirres lived for many years in Wisconsin, having relocated there from Tucson, Ariz., after emigrating from Mexico.

A trip to Orlando and a subsequent search for some good fish to eat brought them to Tarpon Springs, Juan said.

Nowadays, with people watching their pennies, the taqueria provides an inexpensive culinary alternative for families and individuals on a budget, he said.

Their breakfasts cost $4.99. The prices of other items range from $1.99 to $6.99.

Peter Lamborn of Spring Hill strolled into Tacos Cielito Lindo after a doctor's appointment and promptly declared his 8-year search for a good burrito at an end. He ate one burrito at the restaurant and bought more to take home to Hernando County.

Juan hopes the taqueria someday will have outdoor seating.

Seating inside the take-out shop is limited, he said, but most people want to just pick up food and eat at home or on the run.

Tacos Cielito Lindo is open from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Saturday
