TARPON SPRINGS - Valentine's Day will be celebrated here in the downtown Arts and Antique District and the Sponge Docks.
Tarpon Avenue antique merchants will observe the day by paying homage to romance and love with special offerings at their individual shops and restaurants.
From 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. visitors can stroll along Tarpon Avenue, visit the shops and stop in at the Tarpon Springs Area Historical Society's Railroad Depot Museum. Inside the historic former train station, which undoubtedly saw many a romance arrive and depart, merchants will serve up delectable treats, libations and a Valentine's Day tea.
The train depot will also be the site of an antique appraisal fair from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
At a cost of $5 each collectible hunters can have romantic gifts and other items appraised to see if they are worth more than a token of love. The proceeds will benefit the museum.
A short distance away, at the historic Safford House, off Grand Boulevard, the city will conjure up romance with a musical concert paying homage to past Valentine's Days. "Hearts and Flowers" will be performed at 7:30 p.m.
Pianist Constantine Grame and singer Lauren Weber will perform love songs from the late 19th century, the era of town founder Anson P.K. Safford and his sister, Dr. Mary Jane Safford-Blake, said Gen Haley, city marketing and communications coordinator.
Song sheets will be provided for sing-alongs, plus complimentary flowers and chocolates. During intermission visitors can tour the house and learn how Valentine's Day might have been celebrated at the dawn of the 20th century.
"Hearts and Flowers" tickets are $13 for Performing Arts Center members and $15 for nonmembers. The proceeds will benefit the opera program at the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center.
