TARPON SPRINGS - A musical score can seem like hieroglyphics to many who yearn to play their favorite melody or song.
A local composer, music book author and musician, Dan Fox, will help would-be musical aficionado's unravel the melodic and harmonic mysteries found in musical scores. He will present a 10-week series at the Tarpon Springs Heritage Museum called "A Crash Course in Music Reading."
His talks will take place at the museum in Craig Park 7 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday nights between Feb. 18 and April 22.
The course is designed for beginners through intermediate musicians and music lovers who want to learn the fundamentals of music reading, according to Fox. He will teach sight singing and reading, how to utilize expression markings in music, the dynamics of tempo and pitch and reading complicated pieces.
The cost is $50 for the 10-week course. Each additional member of a family would pay $25 to take the course.
For many people reading music is like learning a language, Fox said. He shows them how reading music is not as difficult as they first imagined.
He teaches his students to feel comfortable reading music by developing an "inner ear" through which they "hear" what a piece of music sounds like just by reading the score.
Fox, who is in the midst of composing an opera, said many singers, instrumentalists and music lovers either can't read music or don't read as well as they would like.
Fox, who has a master's degree in composition from the Manhattan School of Music, has penned several songbooks, a guide for music arrangers titled "Write It Right," and a guide for rock and jazz musicians, "The Rhythm Bible." He has also written instruction books for guitar and mandolin.
