PALM HARBOR - Alexandra Haley, a junior at Palm Harbor University High School, said being named Best Actress for 2009 at the District IV Thespian Conference is "mind blowing."

Alex, 16, said she was thrilled to be recognized for her portrayal of the lead role in "The House of Bernarda Alba," a weighty drama written by the Spanish poet and dramatist Federíco Garcia Lorca.

"I worked so hard and put a piece of my soul into the part," said Alexandra, a student in the high school's International Baccalaureate Program. "I must have been doing something right."

She also credited her co-stars.

Alexandra's mother, Gen Haley, marketing and communications coordinator for the Tarpon Springs Cultural Services Department, said Alex first performed at age 12. Her debut was the traditional seasonal production of "Hansel and Gretel" at the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center.

Alexandra "loved the experience and was immediately hooked on musical theater," her mother recalled.

She has been singing and dancing ever since in productions at the Performing Arts Center as well as performances at University High School.

Alexandra hopes to attend a college at which she can major in theater and English. She aspires to a career in acting, dancing, singing and writing.

She will perform "Stepsister's Lament," from Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella," during Sunday night's "Enchanted Evening with the Stars."

The 7 p.m. Feb. 8 event is a fundraiser for the Performing Arts Center, which is inside City Hall, 324 Pine St. More than 30 singers, dancers and instrumentalists are donating their talent and time to "Enchanted Evening with the Stars."
