TARPON SPRINGS - Two days removed from an intensely competitive five-set road loss to rival Palm Harbor University, East Lake got back on track Thursday night with a sweep of Tarpon Springs.
There were some early signs of a hangover from Tuesday night's battle with PHU as the Eagles squeaked through the first game 25-23. Numerous early unforced Eagle errors coupled with some staunch defensive play from Tarpon (2-2) kept the Spongers in the game until East Lake freshman Jackie Wegner ended it with a kill.
After getting handled 25-11 in Game 2, Tarpon Springs showed its resiliency by hanging with the Eagles until finally getting overmatched, primarily at the net.
East Lake (2-2) was led up front by seniors Natalie Mahy (11 kills) and Karly Gilchrist (6 kills) and freshmen Brittnay Estes (7 kills) and Brianna McComeskey (7 kills).
The 6-foot, hard-hitting McComeskey also defended well, tallying three blocks.
Karli Collins stepped up for Tarpon at the net with eight kills while Emily Long contributed with numerous big plays all over the court throughout the night.
