DUNEDIN - The city's Community Redevelopment Agency will learn today about plans by its staff and the Dunedin Historical Society to expand and renovate the society's downtown headquarters and museum.

At the City Hall meeting starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, city commissioners, acting as the CRA board, will also hear a proposal from agency staff to improve the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail Plaza, in front of the former railroad depot turned museum.

The plaza "has become one of the signature places along Main Street and is recognized statewide as an area to mingle, talk, or start and end a day," Robert Ironsmith, CRA director, wrote in a report to commissioners.

"The enhanced plaza will be a focal point for the downtown and activity zone for Main Street along the Pinellas Trail," he declared.

Under the proposed plan, the city would improve the plaza by removing barriers, making it more spacious and planting large Drake elm trees. The city would pay for the improvements with $50,000 in CRA funds.

The Historical Society, in turn, would undertake a $200,000 expansion of the museum. The makeover would include a 612-square-foot gallery and gift shop addition in the east side of the depot and an entrance facing the Pinellas Trail, on Main Street. Four depot galleries would also be renovated.

The society plans to place a piece of public art in front of its museum.
