TIERRA VERDE - A sea of pink is expected to surge through Pinellas County this weekend as more than 1,500 people take part in the Tampa Bay Breast Cancer 3-Day Journey.
About 1,550 participants wearing pink shirts and hats kicked off the 60-mile walk at Fort DeSoto Park this morning. They'll walk 20 miles each day, weaving their way through St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island and Redington Shores before ending at Spa Beach, 615 Second Ave. N.E., St. Petersburg, at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Each walker raised a minimum of $2,200. Eighty-five percent of the net proceeds go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help with breast cancer research, treatment, education and prevention, the organization's Web site says. The remaining 15 percent goes to the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund to provide a permanent endowment for ongoing support of breast cancer initiatives, the Web site says.
This is the fourth year the Tampa Bay area has held the three-day walk. Last year, the event raised more than $5 million, spokeswoman Sarah Ferguson said. This year's total will be announced Sunday.
Donations can be made online throughout the weekend at www.the3day.org.
