Folk Singer Uses Humor To Connect With Audience

If Matt Eddy forgets the lyrics, don't expect him to cover it up.
He will probably openly admit to the blooper, enjoying the laugh on himself more than anyone.
That is part of what makes his performances come alive, he noted.
"I see a lot of musicians who are obsessed with the technical," he observed. "I think it's better to have more fun. I think the crowd responds better."
Eddy will do his monthly gig at Purple Moon, in Dunedin, next Friday. He has been performing there for the last two years.
Eddy has been playing in area coffee houses for the last 12 years. Purple Moon patrons tend to listen to the music more than in some locations, he said, allowing him to develop a rapport with the audience.
Eddy describes his performance as "pretty laid-back folk music" with a lot of Paul Simon and Bob Dylan. He also does indie folk from younger artists such as folk rocker Samuel Beam, who records and performs under the name Iron & Wine, and singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens. Indie folk carries influences from alternative rock.
Eddy occasionally does originals, but he said, he takes writing music in phases and is not in one now.
The simplicity of folk music appeals to him, he noted. "It's easier to relate to," he explains. "It's accessible to almost everybody."
In his day job, Eddy works in data entry at a title search business. He is also writing a humorous novel about "vampire hunters who drink too much and don't get a lot done."
He grew up in Dunedin, so is he a graduate of Dunedin High School?
The puckish humor takes over.
"A dropout of Dunedin High School," he quickly answers.

Folk musician Matt Eddy will perform 8 - 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Purple Moon, 833 Douglas Ave., in downtown Dunedin.
