PALM HARBOR - In an Internet culture in which everyone expects instant information tailored to their needs, the Palm Harbor Library is offering patrons an anytime-anywhere book club.
The library received a Wal-Mart Foundation Community Grant to promote the idea of "Books Clubs to Go," said Debbie Phillips, library spokeswoman.
With the grant the library has acquired a collection of "rolling totes" holding 10 books of the same title.
Book discussion groups can now avail themselves of free books and meet outside the library wherever and whenever they want, Phillips said. A variety of titles are available.
Book club totes are currently available at the Palm Harbor Library, 2330 Nebraska Ave.
Tote books come in a variety of formats from regular size books to large print. There is even a CD variety.
Materials designed to foster discussion - such as a biography of the author, a synopsis of the work, thought-provoking discussion questions and reviews of the book - are included in each tote.
In addition, there is a journal in which book club members can record their thoughts and comments the next group that uses the tote can read.
Each tote circulates for 56 days, so book clubs have enough time to distribute the works to their members, who can then read and discuss the selection.
