TARPON SPRINGS - City police, through its Cops and Kids Program, and firefighters are coming to the rescue of a growing number of needy local families this holiday season.

Both departments are working together to help make the holidays special for Tarpon Springs families who might not otherwise be able to afford it, said Mark LeCouris, interim city manager and police chief.

This year there are many new faces among the city's needy population. There are many more working people who in the past were able to save and provide for their families but have been laid off and are in dire need of help, LeCouris said.

The city, through its Cops and Kids Program and firefighters' food drive, is receiving many more requests for assistance.

The Cops and Kids Christmas Toy Drive is collecting unwrapped new toys for children of all ages. Money is being accepted to provide gifts for youngsters for whom no acceptable toys were donated.

Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue is seeking donations of nonperishable food or grocery gift certificates. They will go in food baskets that will be distributed to needy families. Donations are being accepted through Saturday, Dec. 20.

Last year Cops and Kids provided gifts to more than 300 youngsters in low-income city families. Department volunteers make every effort to match toys to each child's letter to Santa.

Hundreds of food baskets were also distributed by firefighters.

Each year toys are donated from a variety of sources including individuals, business and civic groups, LeCouris said.

This year, Santa will come to the rescue of developmentally disabled adults and needy elderly residents. The city is also partnering with Kids Wish Network.

Cops and Kids' first local motorcycle run through the city helped collect many toys, LeCouris said.

Anyone still wishing to donate toys can come by the Police Department headquarters or send checks to: Cops and Kids Christmas 444 S. Huey Ave., Tarpon Springs, FL 34689.

Donations of food, grocery gift certificates and money are being collected at Fire Station No. 68, 444 Huey Ave., or Fire Station No. 70, on Gulf Road.
