Regarding the article in your Nov. 8 North Pinellas edition on revitalizing the Sponge Docks, I have a few suggestions.
As both a tourist who shopped there and, later, someone who worked there, one major improvement would be to clean up the place.
Several shop owners have gone above and beyond, fixing up their stores and making it a pleasant place to shop.
Others have left it same-o, same-o.
A big improvement would be in the facilities, mainly restrooms – clean them up; provide paper towels.
We would have customers come in and say they would never return because the bathrooms were so bad. That not a great impression to leave with newcomers.
When renting to new stores, put in something that is really going to draw the people to want to shop there for that unique, perfect gift. Don't just give them the tourist junk you see everywhere.
And encouraging themed events would be a wonderful idea.
Those of us who live here would hate to see the demise of this part of Tarpon, but I fear if the right buyer were to come along there would be nothing but condos to take its place.
