Maybe there will be a whiff of orange blossoms at the Tarpon Springs Library today. That's because folk singer Chris Kahl will take people attending his concert there on a musical journey through Florida.

Kahl will perform Florida-themed, acoustic folk songs he composed for his latest album, "Orange Blossom Memories."

"It's a musical journey through Florida," he said of his one-hour performance.

Kahl intersperses stories of Florida history with his music. The program starts with Spanish explorer Ponce de León, ends with the nation's Florida-based manned space program and other modern ventures and includes songs about the state's good life as well.

The program also features a slide show.

Kahl wrote all the songs he will perform and will accompany himself on the guitar.

His folk singing style was influenced by a sojourn in London after he graduated with a major in economics from Rollins College in Winter Park. In London, he sang in local clubs and appeared on British television and radio, including the British Broadcasting Corporation. He also toured in Ireland and Germany

Kahl is now an artist in residence with Brevard County, where he teaches elementary school students Florida history and songwriting.

He was also a Road Scholar with the Florida Humanities Council. In that position, he traveled the state bringing Florida songs and the stories behind them to audiences.

His Florida gigs have stimulated his interest in history, Kahl said, and influenced him to become an active member of a history club. "One of the best things is to look at certain topics and dig deeply into them," he said.
