PALM HARBOR - Palm Harbor librarians plan to offer children and teens a full calendar of summer programs, even if they occasionally have to travel to offsite locations during remodeling.
Lois Eannel, assistant librarian, said even with all the renovations taking place at the library, children and teen services are planning a full slate of summer programs for youngsters of all ages.
In the children's division at the Palm Harbor Library, programs center on teaching youngsters, as young as preschoolers, about the joy of reading.
A reading club for preschoolers, 3 - 5 years of age, has been dubbed "Caution: Readers at Work," to fit in with renovations taking place all around the library.
There are also detective-based reading clubs for youngsters from kindergarten to 6th grade.
Other summer events for children include:
•A family story time at the Starbucks in Palm Harbor at 10 a.m. on a trio of Tuesdays, June 3, July 1 and Aug. 5.
•Six week camp in American Sign Language for children at various times on June 17.
•A kiddie carnival at 5:30 June 21.
•Drum circle at 10 a.m. June 25.
•Summer splash down at 10 a.m. June 12.
•A visit from Ronald McDonald at 10 a.m. June 19.
Katie Banks, teen services librarian, said teenagers also have a wide variety of activities from which to choose while they await the opening of the library's larger Teen Room, slated for August.
A proposed Guitar Hero Wii Tournament, a popular video game, is being scheduled, she said. She said this promises to be a very popular event.
Teen summer programs include;
•A glimpse into the world of nonpermanent henna tattooing 6:30 p.m. July 22;
•An exploration of the stars with the help of telescope experts from the Museum of Science and Industry at 8:30 p.m. on July 9;
•Board game competition starting 1 p.m. June 17.
•A drum circle will be held at 10 a.m. June 25.
Since the library's community room is under renovation, the summer book discussion for teenagers will be held 7 p.m. July 15 at the Baywood Village Association clubhouse. "The Uglies," a young adult science fiction novel by Scott Westerfeld, will be the big topic for discussion.
Banks said she is always interested in hearing about programs that teens would like the library to offer.
Many teens and others are realizing they can borrow the latest DVD releases from the library for free, rather than renting them, Banks noted.
