DUNEDIN - Hundreds of athletes are expected to swim, bike and run a mad dash next weekend at the Rotary Club of Dunedin's 5th annual Dunedin Triathlon.

The triathlon begins 7:30 a.m. Sunday, June 8, in Honeymoon Island State Park.

The event begins with a quarter-mile swim, said Sarah McCallum, race director. The swim is followed by a two-lap, 12-mile bicycle trek along the Dunedin Causeway, which links the park and the mainland, and concludes with a 3.1-mile dash through the northwest section of the state park.

The event is chip-timed. The triathletes will wear a chip around their ankles to time the race.

Runners enjoy the picturesque backdrop of the park, making this race a favorite among triathletes, McCallum said. In addition, all the volunteers who cheer on the athletes really make this a fun race for the 550 to 600 who participate, she said.

This is a great race for the amateur athlete who usually participates in age categories, or the professional class triathletes, she said.

Teams of runners also participate in race relays.

At around 10:30 a.m., a race party and awards ceremony follows for athletes and hundreds of their family members, she McCallum said.

The race entry fee is $60 per person.

There is no rain date. Last year, the swim portion of the race was canceled do to threats from a tropical storm. Another foot race was put in its place, McCallum said.

McCallum is hoping for good weather because the triathlon is the Rotary Club of Dunedin's largest fundraiser. It helps the club provide college scholarships to students, support local civic projects, and fund many other worthy programs, she said.

Athletes are advised to arrive between 6 and 6:30 a.m. The race starts with swim at 7:30 a.m.

We will have several hundred athletes arriving at the same time, so plan ahead. Be early and patient and everyone will have plenty of time to prepare for their race, McCallum said.

There will be a prerace meeting for runners to pickup race packets 1 - 4 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at St. Alfred's Episcopal Church, 1601 Curlew Road. People can also register at that time.

Online registration and more information for the race are available at the Dunedin Triathlon href=http://www.dunedintriathlon.com> Web site.
