DUNEDIN - Officials hope Dunedin can acquire a state recreation grant to offset the cost of much needed deck replacement at the city's marina.
City Manager Rob DiSpirito said Dunedin will apply for a $200,000 state Boating Improvement Program grant to offset the cost of dock and catwalk replacement throughout Dunedin Municipal Marina and boardwalk replacement on its commercial docks.
Commissioners recently voted for the city apply for the grant.
Leisure Services Director Vince Gizzi said the timing of the grant would work out perfectly with the marina's capital improvement plan.
There is no requirement for matching funds but additional points for the grant are awarded if the city provides a match. The city plans to allocate $100,000 available in its marina reserve fund to earn those matching points, Gizzi said.
Commissioner Julie Scales said the grant will provide needed improvements.
Commissioner Deborah Kynes said she would like city staff to look into the feasibility of providing more amenities at the marina, so it can be part of the city's economic tool.
In past meetings, it has been noted that the city's facility does not include many of the amenities of other public marinas.
