The Dunedin Showcase Theater will mark its last production of the season with the very first presentation of a comedy written by one of its members.

"Shakespeare Wranglers of Armadillo, Texas" will premiere next week. It was written by Michael P. Cote, who last appeared in the theater's production of "All My Sons," by playwright Arthur Miller.

Cote will also direct the play.

It concerns a group of British actors who are mistakenly dropped off by a stagecoach in Armadillo instead of Amarillo. The Armadillo mayor schemes to get a performance out of the actors but he has to contend with recalcitrant performers, romantic entanglements and firewater.

This is Cote's first fully scripted play. While living in New Hampshire, he wrote one-acts and interactive murder mysteries. He also had a stint writing shows for children's television. They ran on a local television station in Manchester, N. H.

He came up with the idea of a British touring company meeting the Old West and was amused by the confusion of Armadillo and Amarillo.

Cote promises the audience a good time. Dinner shows on May 9, May 10 and May 11 will feature a chuck wagon buffet from Eli's Bar-B-Que, in Dunedin. Music and sing-alongs liven up the performance.
Audience members are invited to participate by attending in their best Western attire. Prizes for costumes will be awarded.

The light-hearted production is meant to be a contrast to the weighty themes of the company's last production of "All My Sons," said Cote. "We wanted to do something where the audience could come and laugh."

The play features a cast of about 25, including about 10 children. Performances are 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 7, through Saturday, May 10, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, at Dunedin Community Center, 1920 Pinehurst Road, Dunedin.

Tickets for May 7 and May 8 shows are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Dinner shows are $25, reservations required.

Tickets are available at the Dunedin Community Center, 727-812-4530, or the Hale Activity Center, 330 Douglas Ave, 727-298-3299.
