PALM HARBOR -- The impact of proposed county budget cuts on Sheriff's Office services to Palm Harbor, Ozona and Crystal Beach and how successful a second attempt at turning the area into a city are scheduled to be discussed at two Palm Harbor Community Coalition town meetings slated for later this month.
The proposed cuts to the Sherriff's Office budget for the 2009 fiscal year could eliminate community policing, specialized traffic patrols and deputies specializing in DUI enforcement.
At 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, meeting, at the Palm Harbor Community Activity Center, 1500 16th St., off Nebraska Ave., Sheriff Jim Coats will speak about the proposed Sheriff's Office budget cuts and answer questions.
A week earlier, at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 19, at the same location, State Rep. Peter Nehr, R-Tarpon Springs, will report on the 2008 legislative session. He will also answer questions and talk about items such as the fate of the coalition's attempt to win approval from lawmakers to ask voters how they feel about incorporating the Palm Harbor area into a city.
Jim Kleyman, coalition spokesman, said the group wants to resubmit the bill for incorporation to state legislators so residents of the area get a chance to vote on the issue in 2009. Legislators refused to place the question on the ballot this year.
