Dunedin Restaurants To Serve Art, Culture

DUNEDIN - Casa Tina's Mexican Restaurant plans to serve-up a sampling of arts and culture along with its spicy salsa and savory dishes.

Another downtown hospitality outpost has similar ideas.

Tina Avila, who in February tripled the size of the downtown Main Street eatery she owns with husband Javier, wants to help foster the downtown arts and cultural community.

Summer is an especially good time of year because many of her loyal year-round regular customers will be able to come downtown and enjoy more than just a meal, Avila said.

Casa Tina's Mexican Restaurant is joining Flanagan's Irish Pub in bringing arts and culture to downtown. Flanagan's plans to present a series of traditional Irish Pub performances, later this month.

Later this month Avila will premiere a Thursday night series of subtitled Latin films at Casa Tina's. The movies will be shown, starting at 9 p.m., on three screens in the restaurant.

The works of renowned filmmakers such the Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar will be shown, she said. Every week another filmmaker will be previewed.

Saturday night performances by aerialists from the Clearwater Dance and Circus Arts have been a big hit with diners at Casa Tina. Many make reservations asking if they will be performing, Avila said.

The aerialists slide across ropes strung from a portion of the restaurant's ceiling.

She is working on making other ideas come to fruition but this takes time and planning, Avila said.

Not every great idea on paper works in the real restaurant world. Remaining open later on Friday nights to offer Salsa music in more of a club-type atmosphere came into conflict with late night diners, according to Avila.

As a result, Salsa dancing will now be a once-in-a-while thing, she noted.

Casa Tina is not the only downtown restaurant to dabble in the arts. Flanagan's Irish Pub, 465 Main St., will present a series of Pub plays as part of a summer theater series.

Flanagan's summer theater season will kick off 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 24.
