CLEARWATER -- Dunedin Causeway Beach and Honeymoon Island State Park could get an even bigger influx of summer tourists as a result of the city of Clearwater closing its Courtney Campbell Parkway beach because of a fish kill.
An algae bloom, but not the traditional red tide, is suspected of having caused the fish kill and bacteria outbreak, said a city of Clearwater spokeswoman.
The entire stretch of Courtney Campbell parkway, including Ben T. Davis Beach on the Tampa side, is closed while Clearwater city staff clean the area.
To find out when the causeway will reopen call the Clearwater Recreation Department at 727-562-4800.
Honeymoon Island State Park is already enjoying a banner tourist season as a result of the adjacent Caladesi Island being dubbed the best beach in the nation by "Dr. Beach," Professor Stephen Leatherman of Florida International University. Pinellas tourism officials purchased billboards in the Orlando area notifying visitors of the honor.
