DUNEDIN - There promises to be a stylish potpourri of surprises this year at the Dunedin Fine Art Center's Wearable Art Fashion Show 4.
The exhibition has become renowned for spotlighting creations of trendy area fashion designers.
Wearable Art 4, as the show's 2008 edition is called, will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, with a pre-runway party. It will be present at the Dunedin Fine Art Center, in Highlander Park, 1143 Michigan Blvd.
The fashion show begins at 9 p.m., with a musical concert following, at 10 p.m.
In past years the Wearable Art Fashion Show has captivated the imagination of its audiences with dresses made from items such as condom wrappers, dried fruit, duct tape and robots.
The show is intended to stretch a designer's imagination and depict fashion as art, said Kaya Parwanicka, the show's creator and organizer.
"People really have high expectations of us and this only makes us want to make Wearable Art even better and more exciting," she said.
It's amazing how it has grown into a summertime must-go-to event, Parwanicka said. People now come to see Wearable Art from all over the Suncoast, she said.
This year promises even more surprises in every facet of the show, Parwanicka said. They will include a newly designed stage and an after-exhibition party featuring the local band "Have Gun, Will Travel."
And that's not all.
"We don't want to give away all the surprises," she said. "Everyone will have to come and see what we have planned."
Wearable Art 4 will have "the most exciting designers," she said.
Mark "Balloon Guy" Byrne is coming back from a month-long exhibition in China to exhibit his dresses created from balloons.
Another designer who will take part, Ben Chmura, takes his inspiration from the Aztec civilization. He uses only natural fibers and adds a contemporary flair, according to Parwanicka.
Jennifer Stachon and Courtney Davis plan to exhibit a line of dessert inspired dresses, shaped like cupcakes, cotton candy, Twizzlers and other treats.
Designers at Kina Kouture, a shop on Main Street, will exhibit a line of dresses reminiscent of glamour eras such as the Roaring '20s.
This year tickets can be purchased online at www.dfac.org> or at the Dunedin Fine Art Center. Tickets are $15 general admission, with reserved seating either $35 or $50 a person.
The DFAC will present a gallery exhibition of art based on the Wearable Art concept from July 28 to Aug. 17. Pieces in the collection will be part of a silent auction to benefit the center.
