'Chaos."
Anyone who has ever had an unsuccessful relationship can identify with that title of a Jayne Kelli song. According to Kelli, the lyrics tell the story of "trying really hard for someone to understand you, and they just never do."
"A lot of people tell me they can relate to that song," she added.
Kelli will sing many of the songs she has composed at Purple Moon in Dunedin tonight, Saturday. Her act consists mainly of her own songs, most of which are about relationships and some societal issues.
She also slips in a few cover songs to cover all the bases, she noted. She accompanies herself on guitar and keyboard.
Kelli describes her style as "acoustic mellow rock."
She relies on her music to communicate, she said, because she's not much of a talker. That seemed to be the case when she tried to describe what was special about her performance. Kelli seemed to develop as case of modesty, saying shyly people had told her music was rich and added, "I have a pretty good range."
She recently has gone full time with her song writing and performing after a stint as a case manager at Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services in Clearwater.
That marks a return to focusing on music that began in high school in Lapeer, Mich., when she first started performing and continued to the beginning of college at Michigan State University at East Lansing, Mich., when she recorded a CD.
Then studies and a major in psychology intervened. "I kind of didn't have time for music," she recalled.
When she began experiencing physical problems, including anemia and allergies, after moving to Florida, she attributed them to having given up her music. "I really think my body was telling me something," she said.
She has become healthier since she decided to follow her dream. "Taking stress away and doing what you always wanted to do, your health improves," she observed.
In addition to the Purple Moon, she has plays regularly at Beaks Old Florida in St. Petersburg and weekly at the Radisson Hotel Clearwater Central.
