DUNEDIN - Dunedin hopes it has your number when it comes to recycling outdated telephone books.
With new phone directories being delivered throughout the county, city officials are encouraging people to recycle rather than throwing the old listing books in the trash, said Valerie Lane, the city's sustainability coordinator.
If everyone in the city recycled just one phone book it would save 676 trees and about 79,640 pounds of paper, she estimates.
Phone company customers can be proactive and sign-up not to receive printed phone books via e-mail at www.yellowpagesgoesgreen.org>.
Residential phone users do not need multiple sets of phone books, which is what they receive if they have more than one phone line, Lane explained.
On the job, co-workers can share phone books, relieving the need for everyone to have one, Lane said.
In addition, people with computer can utilize online phone listings such as www.superpages.com>, rather than depending on printed phone books, she added.
Dunedin is providing two locations to drop off unwanted phone books:
•Highlander Park, 1141 Michigan Blvd.
•The Solid Waste Building, 810 Lake Haven Road.
Participants in the city's curbside recycling program can place phone books in their blue bin to be picked up by trash haulers. Residents wanting to sign up for the city's recycling program can telephone 727-298-3215, Ext. 24, or visit the city's Web site, www.dunedingov.com>.
