With a singing horse and 16-foot castle, it should be quite a show.

That's what the team at the Dunedin Showcase Theater for Kids is promising from its production next month of "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court."

"These kids are doing a phenomenal job of portraying character," said Tammy Folstad, director of the Showcase Theater's children's division.

The comedy is based on the novel of the same name by Mark Twain. It is adapted for the theater by Tim Kelly.

"A Connecticut Yankee" will be the first of two productions for young people given by the Showcase Theater this year. The nonprofit group also does four adult productions a year.

The play will feature 26 young people ages 7 to 17. All who tried out have parts in the play.

"We think it's important for kids not to be isolated out at this young age," said Folstad.

The young actors have been practicing two evenings a week since auditions were held in October. The older students are helping the younger ones, said Folstad.

"They're all learning to work together," she said.

The production is a community affair with parents and Showcase Theater volunteers helping on costumes and scenery.

The young cast members reflect a wide scope of experience, ranging "from none to a lot," Judy Heady wrote in an e-mail. Heady is directing the play.

The children will perform at 7 p.m. , Friday, Feb. 1, and 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Dunedin Community Center, 1920 Pinehurst Road.

Tickets are $7. They are now on sale at the community center.
