Once again it appears that the mayor of Tarpon Springs and the other Barons of the Bayou are using taxpayer money in an attempt to swing the vote against property tax reform. This time they are convincing each other that cloaking their commission opposition in the guise of "education" and posting it on the City Web site will sneak it past the government watchdogs who in the past condemned using taxpayer money to promulgate an agenda.
It was only a year ago that the mayor was showing up at town hall meetings proclaiming that if property tax reform were to pass the city would be forced to fire police officers and firefighters. Didn't happen.
But somehow money was found to place bumpy – and no doubt expensive – paving bricks at various intersections in town and on various sidewalks. These pavers, in effect, make half the sidewalks unusable to those who may be unsure of their footing. They are already sprouting weeds, which will require increased maintenance costs.
Property tax reform is needed not only here in Florida but nationwide. I hope that in the upcoming City election one of the three candidates will promise to be a true fiscal conservative.
