OLDSMAR, Fla. - OLDSMAR, Fla. - Pinellas sheriff's detectives are crediting a high-tech fingerprint identification system and media coverage for the arrest of a man they believe burglarized a local dry-cleaning business on Christmas Day.
The Sheriff's Office said Anthony D. Carvajal, 37, 7010 N. Oregon Ave., Tampa, was taken into custody Monday evening on a Pinellas County warrant charging him with one count each of felony criminal mischief, tampering with a coin operated machine and grand theft.
Pinellas Burglary and Pawn Unit detectives say Carvajal was a man seen on surveillance film breaking into the Oldsmar Cleaners and Laundry, at 3780 Tampa Road, Unit C1, around 6 p.m. on Dec. 25 where he then removed money from vending machines.
According to detectives Carvajal entered the establishment and then proceeded to pry open or cut the locks off the vending machines. He then fled the store on foot with the money.
Following the crime, the Sheriff's Office released a photo of the break-in suspect inside the business. Detectives then used the Automated Fingerprint Identification System, or AFIS, to link Carvajal to the crime.
Carvajal was being held in the Hillsborough County jail following his arrest on an unrelated charge in that county, according to the Pinellas Sheriff's Office.
According to Florida Department of Corrections records, Anthony Carvajal, who lives at the Oregon Avenue address in Tampa and has the same date of birth as the suspect in the break-in here, was released from prison in 2004. He was arrested in Sarasota County in 2002 on a number of criminal charges, including damaging a coin operated machine, grand theft and resisting and officer with violence.
