TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - This season Friends of Music on the Beach will play host to an almost endless summer of concerts in 2008.

The popular monthly series of Thursday evening concerts at the city – owned Sunset Beach, at the western end of Gulf Road, is expanding to 10 shows.

Sparked by its growing popularity, the concert series will stretch from February to November, said Ann Larson, Friends of Music on the Beach spokeswoman.

Concerts have become a traditional gathering of friends and families who enjoy a few hours of music as the sun sets, she said.

Over the past eight years the number of evening performances has grown from four to eight and now 10 monthly concerts. Each draws from several hundred to about 1,000 music lovers of all ages.

Music on the Beach is an echo of a bygone era from the city's early history, when locals mingled on Sunset Beach on beautiful evenings, according to Larson.

Many concert-goers bring chairs, blankets and picnic dinners. Beach food is available at the concession stand. Alcohol, however, is not allowed at the city beach.

The musical experience differs each month with beach music by bands such as De Lei'ed Parrots being a perennial favorite, Larson said.

This season's concert series is:

• March 20 – Fiddle Matrix, Irish-American fiddle fusion.

• April 24 – Tarpon Springs High School Jazz Ensemble.

• May 22 – De Lei'ed Parrots, a Jimmy Buffett tribute group.

• June 19 – The Classics, classic rock 'n' roll oldies.

• July 17 – JoDell, Country sound.

• Aug. 14 – The Spells, acoustic music.

• Sept. 18 – RoadHouse, classic rock and rhythm and blues.

• Oct. 16 – Dapper Dan Band, rock 'n' roll.

• Nov. 13 – Lil Pearl and Big Boys, rhythm and blues.

Pets, except for service dogs, are prohibited.

Larson said the concert series was expanded with the help of its corporate sponsor, Fruits Real Estate Services, and the city.
