EAST LAKE - EAST LAKE - In effort to reduce the potential for future wildfires, the Florida Division of Forestry will be igniting prescribed burns within northern portions of the Brooker Creek Preserve either Saturday or Sunday.
The procedures will be take place in the portion of the 8,000-acre nature sanctuary north of Keystone Road. Exactly when the burns take place depends on the weather.
Lisa Baltus, who is with the Pinellas County Environmental Lands Division, which operates Brooker Creek Preserve, said that no public recreation areas will be affected because of the burn.
Whether Saturday or Sunday, Baltus said, state forestry officials typically begin burns in the morning, around 9 a.m.
According to the Florida Division of Forestry Website, prescribed burns are the most cost-effective tools for land managers "to reduce hazardous fuel buildups, thus providing increased protection to people, their homes and the forest."
